The New Book#1
My first impression of this book is that it is way better than the Gilgamesh book! But i was a bit confused by chapter 1...was the narrator talking about the past in chapter 1? other than that, the book was really interesting, and i noticed this book is dominated by female since the only male characters that are living in the house so far is the commander and Nick, the rest are handmaids and Marthas. I also notice that people in that society love to interact with opposite sex, from the narrator's point of view, she gets attention of male wherever she goes....the young guardian, the doctor and the servant named Nick. Women in that society are also very cautious as they don't make any unnecessary interaction with men. Proper sex seems to be very important in that society as the two guardians were hanged for practicing homosexual acts and back in the house, the commander's wife would hold the narrator down and allows his husband, the commander, to have sex with the narrator. The narrator made it seem like it was more of a ritual than an enjoyable practice to have sex with the commander, and i don't think the commander enjoys having sex with the narrator as he tried not to touch her as much as possible and he left the room immediately after he's done with his business.

John, That's a great point you bring up about the role of sex in the story. It's easy for us to imagine how Offred might feel in this situation (particularly how oppressive being a handmaid might be), but I like you you consider how the commander might feel in being forced to do this. I know some people feel a bit uncomfortable about Atwood's graphic depiction of sex in the novel, but in examining sex, we might gain some deeper insight into the society. These are excellent ideas I would encourage you to bring up as we explore ideas of Gileadan society! Also, I'm glad you are enjoying the book. What makes you like reading about this society more interesting than reading about Le Guin's society of Gethen in Left Hand?
